The Venue

Monasterio de Sant Jeroni de Cotalba

The Monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba, near Alfauir in Valencia, was founded in 1374 and relocated to Cotalba in 1388 by Alfonso of Aragon to protect monks from pirate attacks. Alfonso built a fortress, and the site became linked with figures like Saint Vincent Ferrer and poet Ausiàs March’s family. In the 16th century, the Borgia family expanded the monastery, with contributions from Maria Enriquez de Luna and frequent visits by Saint Francis Borgia. Renaissance painter Nicolás Borrás joined the monastery and created notable works, including an altarpiece and frescos, enhancing its artistic significance.

After the monks were expelled in 1835 during the Ecclesiastical Confiscations, the Trénor family acquired the monastery in 1843. It served as a military hospital during the Spanish Civil War and was later restored after being declared a cultural interest site in 1994. The monastery reopened to the public in 2005, with much of its historic structure and artwork now accessible to visitors.
